The start of the hot season seems perfect for replacing my last CRT with a cool new LCD monitor. I have looked at one that is quite a bit larger than the old one, especially wider. It is rather affordable too, and its 1680x1050 max resolution seems to be in range of my current hardware. The question is, will the extra screen estate on the sides actually be useful or just perma-black? I plan to use it for my writing & windows-games PC. I seem to remember that widescreen is recommended for office work, as you can have two pages visible at the same time or extra resources residing at the edges of the workspace. I doubt most games will support it though, more's the pity. Seeing a larger stretch of the terrain would give an unfair advantage in MMORPGs.
