Space shuttle disaster

I am sorry to hear about the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its astronauts.

Astronautics is an inherently dangerous occupation at our current level of technology, never mind that the space shuttles all are from our previous level of technology, before many of the progresses made in advanced ceramics and metallics. The next generation of space shuttles is supposed to be more than 100 times safer. Due to economic considerations, the next generation of space shuttles is not yet in production. Then again, it always comes down to that, doesn't it? We could travel to the stars now, if we could afford it.

At least, these people did what they did to improve the lives of people here on Earth. They were taking part in useful scientific projects. They were not adventurers or glory-seekers, but hard working professionals whose death is to be lamented. I salute their courage.
