Excusez-moi?

My web statistics show that the Chaos Node, my big journal, has suddenly a heap of hits from France and Canada. Was it something I said, or are they just desperate for pictures from DarkAgeofCamelot? (To the best of my knowledge, French and somewhere around 1/5 of Canadians can't read English.)

Continued foiling of best laid plans

As I started the PC this afternoon, it suddenly turned off. It came back up in secure mode, and after this I could only get 16 colors and 640x480 screen resolution. This persisted until I installed another driver for the graphics chipset. (Not something the average user should be supposed to do, I say.)
The computer blacked out once more, and again when the power went out here for a few minutes. I suppose the two first too were caused by interrupted power supply. Normally the power here is so stable that few care to buy an UPS.

When I tried to start DAoC to get a screenshot for tonight's article on virtual child porn, the game crashed with a cryptic error about kernel. On repeated attempts, it amended to DDRAW.DLL, which I traced to the windows system folder but otherwise could not see anything strange about. Then in a fit of inspiration I started The Sims, which also crashed but complained that I did not have DirectX 7 or higher. So now I am downloading DirectX 8.1 from Microsoft. It's worth a try, don't you think? But I can't help but think these metal heaps are actively sabotaging me...

Napster porn?

I am entirely too fast in deleting spam. It is filtered to a special folder, where I summarily kill it off but at least I get to see the headlines so I don't risk just filtering out a mail from my best friend just because it says "I will give you money for having sex with me". Not that any such mail has been forthcoming, but I digress.

Today I summarily vaporized a batch of spam and just in their moment of departure noticed that one of them managed to say something like "Napster porn" or perhaps "Napster-like porn". Something like that. It momentarily gave me this disturbing idea of Napster and Gnutella going at it like bunnies. Given the number of small 2nd generation Napster-like programs on the Net, you have to wonder ...

Yes, I am easily amused.

And again ...

I downloaded and installed DirectX 8.1, and the graphics are now up and running. Sadly the sound card is now inoperative. In the control panel, when I go to the sound options, all options are greyed out. Going to the system section, I ask the system to update the driver and am politely told that I have the newest driver. I am now downloading some random driver for the VIA AC'97 audio chipset, which is what I use. No wonder normals need to have cars - just to freight the computers to and from the shop every time something goes wrong.

I'll enlist the aid of you computer geniuses out there when this doesn't work, I guess.

It will surprise no one

that my computer is still soundless, after installing driver, after removing the unit from the unit list and detecting it anew, as well as restarting the computer every now and then. Oh well. It's not like you need sound on a computer anyway, right?
