CMX: Baikonur
No, that's not Icelandic for bacon. Well, it would be amusing if it were. Baikonur is a space launch site in Kazakhstan. But in this context, it is a song by the Finnish band CMX. This song is awesome, for the reason that I like it. I heard it on Last.FM, and before it was finished I had added it to my Loved Tracks. Since then it has grown on me, so I began to wait for it to come again. (I have amassed rather a number of loved tracks, by my standards. It would take hours to get through them all.) Unfortunately it is not easy to buy Finnish music if you don't live in Finland. And unlike many other well-known songs, it doesn't seem to be on YouTube or Imeem. So Last.FM is for now the only way I can hear it. Anyway I think it would be worth buying if I could. But even the "buy" button on Last.FM only takes me to a bunch of other CMX tracks.

The Finns are awesome at making melancholy songs. Incidentally, the Finns are supposedly direct descendants of the Cro-Magnon, the first of our species to replace the Neanderthals in Europe. This makes a lot of sense, they probably retreated up there when the weather became unbearably hot further south. It is easy to imagine the men gathering in some deep underground cave filled with paintings of bison and horses and phalluses in the flickering light of a single tar-drenched torch, solemnly singing: "minä olen unohtanut miltä tuntuu rakastaa" like they truly mean it.

The finnish sentence looked so out of place on your journal. Did you google for the lyrics, or can you actually hear that that's what they sing? By the way, I tried to locate an MP3 of the song for you (and maybe for myself, since i got curious now?), but I seem to have no luck so far.

I totally had to google for these lyrics. What is worse, that line was the only one that makes sense to me even in writing. -_- I truly suck at Finnish. If I ever am in Finland, I better hope I won't need anything except milk chocolate, ice cream and the way to the railroad station. (I got my priorities straight, you see!) Finnish is really hard.

...Finnish is IMPOSSIBLY hard, because they have about a million forms of each word. If I remember right, they have about 16 case endings, and then also endings for plurals or questions and such on top of that.

My best friend is a huge "fan" of everything Finnish, so he calls me up sometimes and gives me a lecture on which endings should come in which order and such. Not that I remember that much of what he says, but at least I remember that the ending which is normally the preposition "in" in other languages, is -ssa or -ssä. So, "in Norway" is "Norjassa", I think. It's fun, but it's also really hard to remember!

By the way, I didn't know you could speak ANY Finnish at all. You impress me :-D

By the way Zimena, you probably have itunes since you are an Apple fan, right? You could check there if they have it. I don't really want to install itunes just on the off chance that they might have an old Finnish song - it is rumored to be hard to get completely off your machine once it is in.

iTunes is a good thing, sometimes. They have it. However, they have some weird rule on it, which makes you unable to buy single songs from that album. So, you either have to buy the whole album or nothing at all. Also, the "Baikonur" song they have on iTunes is about 10 minutes long. This seems weird unless there is some hidden bonus track attached to it. But if you want the album, I can download it and just come and give you the CD somewhere in town?

Nah, I can install itunes on one of my innumerable computers. I just would not go through the hassle for nothing. This was good news indeed. I have seen a couple of their music videos and it is not impossible that there may be more music on the album that I might take a liking to.

Okay then. Good luck, and I hope the rest of the album is as good as that one song!
